Pointless. This SEM image shows an abraded echinoid spine at 60 x magnification. The entire spine has the appearance of a single calcite crystal with strong exterior ribbing and an internal meshwork structure. In life echinoid spines are attached to the body of the organism with a ball and socket structure and soft tissue linkages. With death of the organism, decomposition, mechanical and biological reworking in local sediment causes the spines to detach and become abraded and fragmented. At the top of the image, there is subtle dome shape (largely abraded way) which represents the former attachment socket. The bottom of the image shows the top of the spine (slightly narrower) which has lost its pointed termination from fragmentation and abrasion. In thin-sections of echinoid spines viewed with a polarising microscope they almost always have a dusty-speckled appearance. The open meshwork seen on the spines interior here become infilled by fine sediment (either local mud sized fractions or the products of biological erosion), and imparts the speckled characteristic. Algae, it grows on you. Evolving in the Cambrian, Red Algae (Phylum Rhodophyta) are photosynthetic and so require light. However, Red Algae are best adapted to utilise blue wavelengths of light which penetrates into deep waters. So, Red Algae can be found to depths of 125 metres or more. Members of the Red Algae family have several growth habits existing as: fragments of encrusting, nodular and ridgid branching plants; as erect, articulated, branching or aborescent forms or; as massive encrusters and binders or coatings on other grains. With very high magnification or thin-sections it is possible to see the complex internal structures of the Red Algae. At the 40 x magnification shown here though the Red Algae has the appearance of a calcitic veneer on the surface of a larger benthic foraminifera. This heavy calcification and stable calcite mineralogy leads to typically exceptional preservation of internal and external structures and external outlines. 2000 x mud! Composed almost exclusively of aragonite, modern marine green algae are common at depths of 2-30 m with wide salinity tolerances. Green algae such as this fragment of Halimeda occur in the tropics to sub-tropics where waters are warm. Halimeda are highly important sediment contributors to sand- and mud-sized fractions of modern and ancient carbonate deposits. In the Bahamas Halimeda can be responsible for up to 70% of the carbonate sediment in a given location. Halimeda grow as upright, segmented, shrubby ‘plants’ about 5-15 cm high. Each segment of the Halimeda is composed of extremely small needle-like aragonite crystals ~0.005 mm in length (as seen here at 2000 x magnification). The needles become disseminated and dispersed upon death when the Halimeda segments fall apart and are fragmented by wave action. Scales of observation. Larger benthic foraminifera are a broad and diverse group of protist organisms that produce calcitic tests in a variety of shapes and sizes. This fragment of a Soritinae demonstrates one of many chamber arrangements found amongst the foraminifera. Multichambered foraminifera may have chambers arranged in a single linear chain (unisexual), in double (biserial) or triple (triserial) rows. Others, such as this one, have chambers arranged in a spiral within a single plane (planispiral). Other foraminifera can also display more complex patterns. What is interesting here is that the chambers of the foraminifera can remain open upon death or be infilled. In this example at 100 x magnification the chambers have been partially infilled by a mixture of salt crystals (bright white), clusters of carbonate mud, shell and foraminifera fragments and in one chamber a single seagrass pollen grain (far right). At less than 0.005 mm these infilling grains can provide vital insights into the ecology and sedimentology of modern and ancient environments. Picked this one up at the Dollar Tree. Wow what a find. I have not read it yet but it sounds interesting. The reviews have been mixed. It sounds as though you will either love it or hate it. I hope to love it. I will keep you posted. I love the picture I took as well. How good it looks on the rock fireplace. #reading #rockandahardplace #angiestanton #bookshelf

Insta-urchin. Echinoids, or sea urchins, evolved in the Late Ordovician (~455 million years ago) and now live in normal marine environments. Mostly living as grazers or burrowers echinoids can be found from sandy shorelines through to rocky platforms and even at abyssal depths. In life echinoid tests (shells) are covered with elongate, moveable spines that can be less than a millimetre through to almost eight centimetres in length. These spines usually detach on death and can be significant sediment contributors. Seen here at 600 x magnification is part of an echinoid spine from a modern tropical beach. The spine shows the characteristic meshwork of tiny 0.015 mm-diameter pores. Despite appearing to be constructed from a smooth continuous material it actually consists of micro crystals of calcite that are so small they cannot be seen at low magnification (even 600 x magnification used here). At the end of the spine the structure changes; this is the attachment point to the echinoid body. #geology #geologyrocks #rocks #rockstar #palaeontology #blackandwhite #macro #fossiladdict #fossils #sem #sand #echinoid #seaurchin #spine #calcite #sibuan #semporna #indonesia #sedimentary #naturalworld #ocean #sea #blackandwhite #rockaroundtheclock #rockandahardplace #getyourrocksoff #maddenthings #schoolofrock #sincethebeginning
