After nearly six decades of #castrofamily rule, the story of the #cubanrevolution opens up to a new chapter. On Wednesday, the country’s national assembly nominated the incumbent vice-president Miguel Díaz-Canel to replace the 86-year-old Raúl Castro as the leader of #cuba. Today, this decision was officially confirmed. While this unprecedented transition has the power to reshape the direction of country’s revolutionary aspirations, Díaz-Canel is still a political insider committed to the values of the revolutionary project. He is ending an era nonetheless. Unlike his predecessors, he did not fight in the Cuban Revolution; he did not experience the pre-revolutionary Cuba. How will this affect his legitimacy and his policy-making remains to be seen.
