THE KEEPER OF THE FOREST The Northern Leaf-tailed Gecko (Saltuarius cornutus) from Julatten, QLD. These large geckoes can attain lengths of a whopping 22cm. Their large leaf-like tails can be 8cm of that length! Their scientific name Saltuarius translates to 'Keeper of the forest' in Latin. Unlike most geckos, they have clawed toes and no adhesive discs, perfectly suited to a life among the trees. When inactive during they rely on their superior camouflage to protect them from predators by pressing themselves flat against tree trunks. At night they become active to move into the ideal position to ambush unsuspecting insects and spiders.
