Baraka has another waterbuck to hang out with! Little Zinga was rescued last month, after Kenya Wildlife Service rangers found her abandoned in Tsavo National Park. Now five weeks old, she has just started to eat solid foods and is thriving at our Kaluku Field HQ. Zinga (left) and Baraka (right) are two of several orphaned antelopes that we are raising. They will remain in our care until they are ready to return to the wild — and even then, we will continue to protect them through our field teams. In the meantime, however, these two seem perfectly content with their current situation! • • • Photo © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust / Freya Dowson #dswt #baraka #barakadswt #zinga #zingadswt #waterbuck #antelope #whyilovekenya #kenya #africa #magicalkenya #conservation #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #worthmorealive #kaluku #kalukufield
Baraka was born with a deformed front leg which, we suspect, is the reason her mother abandoned her. Lots of time and TLC at our Kaluku Field HQ did the trick, and now the waterbuck can walk (and even jump!) with the best of them. When she’s ready, Baraka will return to the wild — but in the meantime, she’s thoroughly enjoying being pampered by our Kaluku team! • • • Photo © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust / Freya Dowson #dswt #baraka #barakadswt #waterbuck #antelope #whyilovekenya #kenya #africa #magicalkenya #conservation #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #worthmorealive #kaluku #kalukufield
Much like the elephants in our care, the orphaned antelopes at our Kaluku Field HQ also have a deep affinity for their milk bottles! Baraka, a waterbuck, can’t help but wag her tail while she drinks, while Sabasa, a kudu, takes a more stoic approach. We will give both of them support, shelter, and sustenance (and yes, lots and lots of milk bottles) until they are ready to rejoin wild populations in a protected area. • www.thedswt.org • • • Video © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #dswt #baraka #barakadswt #sabasa #sabasadswt #kudu #waterbuck #antelope #whyilovekenya #kenya #africa #magicalkenya #conservation #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #worthmorealive #kaluku #kalukufield
BEAUTIFUL!! 😍 #repost @dswt ・・・ Tiny Toto has stolen all our hearts, but Sala is particularly smitten. Despite the fact that she barely got to know her own mother – Sala was orphaned at just one week old – the kudu’s maternal instincts are strong and she has taken it upon herself to look after Toto. The baby dik-dik loves all the attention and is becoming rather spoiled! We are currently raising Sala and Toto at our Kaluku Field HQ. When they’re old enough, both orphans will be reintegrated back into nearby wild herds, but between now and then, we foresee lots of pampering in their futures. • www.thedswt.org • • • Video © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #dswt #sala #saladswt #toto #totodswt #kudu #dikdik #antelope #whyilovekenya #kenya #africa #magicalkenya #conservation #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #worthmorealive #kaluku #kalukufield #dswtat40
Meet Toto Follow @dswt and support the cause 😍 #repost @dswt (@get_repost) ・・・ As we get ready to ring in 2018, we’d also like to look back on everything that happened over the past year and thank you — our followers, our benefactors, our cheerleaders — for the part you played in it. Your support helps make our work possible! In 2017, we welcomed newcomers like Musiara and Mundusi into our Nursery herd, and we cheered as orphans like Rapa and Pare graduated to our Reintegration Units. It was the year that we fell in love with Humpty the hippo and smiled at the antics of Zumzum the monkey. We rooted for our field teams as they de-shared giraffes, reunited elephant calves with their mums, and helped a group of hungry lion cubs. 2017 also marked our 40th anniversary — and as we celebrate four decades of conservation work, we also look forward to making even more progress for Kenya’s wildlife in the decades to come. Our most popular post of 2017 was the video of Sala bathing tiny Toto, and in honor of New Year’s Eve, here is an extended look at the moment between the kudu and dik-dik. From all of us at the DSWT, happy New Year! • www.thedswt.org • • • Video © David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #dswt #sala #saladswt #toto #totodswt #kudu #dikdik #antelope #whyilovekenya #kenya #africa #magicalkenya #conservation #saynotopoaching #racingextinction #jointheherd #worthmorealive #kaluku #kalukufield #dswtat40 #2018 #happynewyear
