It has been an emotional day for me. It was brought to my attention recently that a winery in our community wanted to change the name of the road they are on to their winery name. Obviously they are doing this for advertising purposes for their business. The name of the road is Cox Schrader Road and it is named after two of the oldest families in our community that have deep roots and history here. One of those names ‘Cox’ is my family. I’m an eighth generation in the Ukiah Valley and my family first settled in the area in the 1800s. Much of the land was owned and farmed by the Cox family and Schrader family hence why the road got its name. Many roads in our area are named after first settlers or founding families and it helps us remember our history. Today I got up and spoke in front of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors opposing the initiative for a road name change to reflect the Rivino Winery name. It was so emotional for me to get up and speak and I fought back tears. It is so upsetting someone could discredit a piece of history and a founding family that had so much impact in our community. My grandfather was responsible for much of the growth and development in the area during his lifetime. He was a leader and he and his family are a part of this communities history. The fact that someone could just take that away made my heart hurt. And so I fought back tears alongside other family members and speakers voicing my reasons why I oppose the change. In the end I was left in disbelief as the supervisors voted in favor of the name of the road reflecting the Rivino name. I’m so disappointed at the winery and our supervisors for their decision. I can only imagine what my grandpa would say to them if he was here. I was so upset that after work I took a drive on the ranch to feel my grandpas presence and I thought maybe he would send me some kind of sign. A sick or wounded quail came up to me and I picked him up. I have never held a wild quail and he
