“The animal brain still lies within the human brain. Observing primates like the gorilla gives us the opportunity to see the origins of our behaviours like anger, jealousy, greed, and sexual compulsion, stripped of the human facade.” Last year, after @therealjunglejane and I visited the Karisoke Research Centre Dian Fossey (pictured) set up 50 years ago for the study and conservation of gorillas, I spoke to John Fowler - a specialist in treatment research for people with mental illnesses - (and others) for @refinery29uk about how his work under the eminent primatologist ‘qualified’ him to work with people. There is still so much to learn. #gorillas #dianfossey #earthday #nature #rwanda #eastafrica

Alright πŸ˜‚ so bare with me, I know #earthday was yesterday, but having just gotten back from a hike, i had no energy when we got back to edit/post πŸ˜‚ Earth day should be everyday anyway 😍🌍 we live on an insanely beautiful planet and that should always be celebrated!❀️🌳🐊🐾 Too often do we forget how much EVERYTHING we do relies on this planet! Look around your home think about all the things you use every single day! -->Mobile phone? One of the necessary components is a rare metal named coltan, mined principally from the rich mines of Congo, where deforestation rates go unprecedented, let alone the devastating socio-political effects of capitalist exploitation of one of the last pristine areas in the world... πŸ’ΉπŸ’±πŸ”₯ --> The tyres of your car? Or anything else made from rubber /latex? An area of tropical forest equivalent to 50 football fields is cleared in the Amazon forest EVERY MINUTE!!!!🌳πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ --> Look in your pantry: I'm sure you're all familiar with palm oil and the associated destruction in Indonesian forests, along. For each habitat we destroy, thousands of species go extinct. Close your eyes and count to 3... 1... 2... 3! One specie somewhere on Earth has gone extinct in those 3 little seconds! πŸΎπŸ¦…πŸ¦’πŸ… And that's just the tip of the iceberg... ... The examples are endless: plastic, food waste, coal, cosmetics... ... ... There's one common misconception that  we, as individual consumers, cannot do anything to change the current dire situation our planet is in. Not unless we make some grand sacrifice. But that's all it it: a misconception! We don't all need to go vegan/give up our cars/stop flying to make a difference. If everyone did little things, everyday, such as recycling/ bringing your own bag to the supermarket, eat vegetarian twice a week, etc... .. .. I'm starting a challenge today, every morning I'll set a reminder with my alarm, and try to think about one way I can try and make a difference that day. As
Nature has the ability to humble, excite and ignite the spirit...happy Monday!
