I don’t drink on a Tuesday. But this week feels a little bit inside-out. Drink I will. @spinifexwines ‘12 Esprit; Grenache, Mataro, Cinsault and other friends from the Rhone... it is all you can ask for in a Rhone-style red. Savoury spicy strawberry, nods of raspberry, a lick of licorice and earthy notes. Gluggable elegance. Absolutely hitting her straps, drying tannins, acidity cooling it’s jets... the remains of a dozen in the cellar on real shaky ground - drinking dropzone.
Sneak peaking the upcoming “Heaven & Earth” by that genius @kamasiwashington - yet another epic on the cards. His music explodes my heart.
Australia played Argentina and NZ in a three-way tussle for king of the Bordeaux blends. @lindemans_wine 2001 Pyrus, @mendelwines 2009 Unus and @pegasusbaywine ‘09 Maestro. The Pyrus drinking superbly, the Maestro, my pick of the bunch on a recent trip to Christchurch, was absolutely stunning. Unus stole the show when in Mendoza a few years back, and has once more here - power, finesse, precision, structure and grace. Happily leaving a few bottles in the dust for another 5-8 years.
Last night’s 2 hour event Paint & Plonk with @bustle_studios and @mz_illustrations went for 5 hours. The budding Picassos taking the “plonk” part to the next level post painting. A great night, great fun, but as always it’s the people that make it special.
Want to get messy? The last few tickets are up for grabs for Paint & Plonk; a brushless painting class with buckets of booze. @mz_illustrations & @bustle_studios and this wine idiot teaming up for a splash of fun. Friday 20th of April, link in bio...
Lunch. It tasted like wine. Was bloody good.
@gomeztheband just reaffirmed why they’re my favourite band.
Those albums that define. 19 years later I remember the day I bought @groovearmadapics Vertigo. Long weekend listening, nail on head.
Cheese poisoning. The lethargic, stomach curdling dustiness that too much fromage leaves behind on the morning after. Cheese poisoning is in no way related to the handful of beers and numerous bottles of wine from last night. Domaine A ‘01 Cabernet was simply sublime, still whistling away at 17 years and room for another 6 or 7 more. @edenroadwines Gundagai Shiraz might’ve just earned a place in the cellar; great expression of cool climate... a dozen on order.
Finger painting. It was the artistic highlight of my childhood. And it’s back!!! I’ve teamed up with @bustle_studios and @mz_illustrations for Paint & Plonk; an evening of all things paint and wine. Who doesn’t want a glass of rosé on board when creating the next Archibald winner! Friday April 20th, Surry Hills. Go to Eventbrite for tickets.
39° weeks after summer supposedly left. You can deny climate change all you want. You can not deny gin. The ball-tearing 59% Navy Strength from @iron_house_brewery teamed with @ps40bar Bush Tonic. Undeniably refreshed.
Dinner. @mazimassydney style. The food was “out of the blocks” racy; a whack of flavour, a punch of spice. Warm, harbour-side evening. Old school cool location. Perfect.
@mazimassydney is a pop-up restaurant project supporting asylum seeker & refugee women with rights to work. I’m proud that they want to partner with my little venture, and more than happy to support a good cause. Night 2 of their Sydney Harbourside event is on today.
Rustic sour cherry. Mouth drying acidity. Standard issue Sangiovese. Hand in glove with pizza, pasta and... curry. Yep, curry, because I’m all about multiculturalism.
The intensity of shame. Deep, dark rich fruits. Coffee, dark chocolate, coconut, faint vanilla spice. They all leapt from @woodscrampton ‘13 Shiraz. I’m hardly drinking these days; took me an hour to finish a beer the other night. Was joining my mates on alternate rounds at the pub. This bottle will easily cover me two nights. The shame of a wine dude who’s slowing down. The intensity of character savoured when you enjoy the plonk with a bit more ease.
Into the rabbit hole. @thenational
Scrubbing up on my schoolboy Latin.
An importer took me onboard a vessel. Played lucky dip trying to locate a container of Italian delicacies. A scene echoing Jeffrey Smart... and those big crane-type things that look like brontosaurus.
